The path disappeared a little way ahead. Not entirely, just enough that the next stretch felt separate from everything behind it. There was no grand view to wait for. The mist was the view.
A smaller world
On clear days, we tend to look towards whatever is furthest away. A ridge, a horizon, the end of a long road. In the mist, the world became smaller. A handful of branches. Damp stone. The quiet shape of the next tree.
We walked a little more carefully and looked a little more closely. The forest did not need to offer anything spectacular. There was plenty to notice in the few metres around us.
Enough for now
After a while, we stopped trying to work out whether the weather would clear. The morning was already happening. Waiting for it to become something else seemed like a good way to miss it.
A drop of water fell from a leaf. Somewhere ahead, someone laughed. We kept walking, content to discover the trail a little at a time.
There is a lot to see when you stop waiting for a better view.
A small thing to try
Spend five quiet minutes looking at what is close by. A window ledge, a garden corner, or a single tree is enough to begin.
